# The skills matrix

> Who can do what, across the whole team — the view that shows where you have only one person.

The same facts as the technician list, asked from the other end.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/assetinfinity/95UxrhuglB-erOSy/images/workforce/skills-matrix.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=95UxrhuglB-erOSy&q=85&s=6655918685202bd018095c2094996e82" alt="The skills matrix" width="2880" height="1800" data-path="images/workforce/skills-matrix.png" />

## Why it is a separate screen

The technician list answers *"what is Raj able to do"*. The matrix answers *"who else can do this
when Raj is on leave"* — which is the question that decides whether a plant can cover a shift.

A per-person list can never answer it. The reader would have to hold five rows in their head to see
the gap, and gaps found that way are found late.

## Reading it

Skills down one axis, people across the other. A filled cell means that person holds that skill.

What you are looking for is a **row with one mark in it**. That is a skill one person holds, and the
day they are away is the day work needing it stops.

## What to do about a thin row

* **Train somebody.** Training courses are configured under
  [workforce settings](/config/workforce).
* **Cover it by contract.** A [vendor](/commercial/vendors) with that capability is cover, if a
contract is in place before you need it.
* **Know about it.** Sometimes one person is the honest answer — but it should be a decision, not a
  discovery.

## Certifications

Certifications show alongside skills, with their expiry. A certification about to lapse is a row
about to get thinner, which is why expiry warnings arrive early rather than on the day.

## Keeping it accurate

The matrix is only as good as what is recorded on each person. Skills and certifications are set on
the [technician](/workforce/technician-detail), and configured as a list under
[workforce settings](/config/workforce).
